Martha J. Bekink Consulting provides strategic advisory services to clients on rule of law and human rights issues, communications and institutional strategy, and China strategy. Based in Amsterdam, MJB Consulting works with clients in the Netherlands and around the world, often on projects involving multiple stakeholders and cross-cultural relationships.
About
Mattie J. Bekink is an Amsterdam-based consultant working on rule of law and other issues. As President of Martha J. Bekink Consulting, she has worked with a variety of clients since establishing her consultancy in 2011. Her work focuses on rule of law and human rights issues, communications and institutional strategy work, and China strategy. Mattie has experience in the public, private, and policy sectors, with special expertise on Chinese law and society and human rights.
Martha J. Bekink Consulting provides tailored advisory services to nonprofit clients. Mattie’s practice draws on the disciplines of law, communications, and policy, including project management from conception to implementation and evaluation, building cross-cultural relationships, strategic communications, writing, and advocacy.
Prior to establishing MJB Consulting, Mattie was the deputy country director of the American Bar Association’s Rule of Law Initiative China Program. She has also worked as an associate in the international arbitration and litigation group at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, as a fellow at the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice at NYU School of Law, and as policy associate at the Center for American Progress.
Mattie has a B.A. in International Relations from Stanford University and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. Mattie speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese, basic Dutch, and has some capacity in Arabic and Italian. She has lived and worked in Asia, North America, Europe, and the Middle East.
Services
Rule of Law / Human Rights
Provide substantive advice on rule of law or human rights issues or conduct project work related thereto.
MJB works with clients on substantive human rights or rule of law issues. Includes developing strategies, undertaking project work, and engaging with organizations on these issues.
Communications
Provide communications and public affairs support.
This includes media strategy and execution, relationship management, and general communications work. MJB specializes in working with clients whose communications needs involve diverse audiences or multiple stakeholders and/or have a cross-cultural, multi-lingual component. Writing and ghost-writing services are also offered.
Institutional Strategy
Support organizations in assessing their work, identifying and implementing strategies for growth or change.
MJB works closely with clients seeking to assess and improve upon their work or refine their institutional strategy in order to best achieve their goals.
China Strategy
Assist clients in navigating an entry into China or advise on existing efforts in China.
MJB consults with various institutions to help them strategize about their work in China. This has included assisting advising organizations with minimal or no presence in China on their entry strategy as well as helping organizations currently operating in China in assessing their efficacy in order to inform long-term strategy and goals.
Monitoring and Evaluation
Design and execute monitoring and evaluation assessments for international rule of law projects, primarily in China.
Most government or foundation funded rule of law grants programmes require that interim and final assessment reports be conducted by an expert. MJB draws upon experience in the rule of law field to work with university, NGO, or institutional grantee clients to conduct assessment reports of their programmes for their donors.
